What is IELTS?

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is the world’s most popular English language proficiency test for higher education and global migration. IELTS is accepted by more than 11,000 universities, employers, professional bodies, immigration authorities and government agencies worldwide.

The test assesses your English language ability in listening, reading, writing and speaking. It allows you to prove that you can live, study or work anywhere English is the main language of communication.

IELTS preparation course empowers its test takers with the options, resources and opportunities they need to succeed. IELTS exam is available to be taken on paper or on a computer at thousands of test centres across the world.

Why is IELTS important?

More than 11,000 organisations globally trust IELTS, so when you take the test you can be confident that it is recognised by educational institutions, employers, governments and professional bodies around the world. As one of the pioneers of four skills English language testing 30 years ago, IELTS continues to set the standard for English language testing today. Governments in Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the United Kingdom use IELTS to process immigration applications.

Study in the UK

The UK is home to many of the world’s leading universities and offers international students an academic experience that is hard to beat.

  • International students will be offered a two-year work visa after graduating from a British university

  • 80% of international alumni would recommend studying in the UK

  • 69% feel that being an alumnus of a UK university has allowed them to progress more quickly in their career

All British universities and colleges accept IELTS Academic results. This means you may not need to take an IELTS for UKVI (Academic) test because you may be able to submit an IELTS Academic result. Before booking your test, make sure to check which test and score you need with the university or college you are applying to.

Post-study work visa

The UK government has announced a new two-year post-study work visa. The visa will be open to all international students who have valid UK immigration status as a student and have successfully completed a course of study in any subject at undergraduate level or above at an approved UK Higher Education Provider. The visa will allow eligible students to work, or look for work, in any career or position of their choice, for two years after completing their studies.

Organisations that recognise IELTS

IELTS is accepted by over 11,000 organisations in more than 140 countries. These include:

  • universities, schools, colleges and training organisations

  • government departments and immigration authorities

  • professional and industry associations

  • multinational companies and employers.

Live and work in the UK

Live or work in the UK

The United Kingdom is the fifth largest economy in the world and offers a wide range of job opportunities. With its good working conditions, average salary of £29,009 (Office for National Statistics survey 2018), and many international communities, it continues to be a popular destination for international graduates.

If you are taking the IELTS test to support a UK visa application to work or live in the UK, you will need to take one of the following tests:

  • IELTS for UKVI (UK Visas and Immigration) Academic

  • IELTS for UKVI General Training

  • IELTS Life Skills

Which of these tests you take and the score you need will depend on both your visa requirements and or the requirements of the institution where you plan to study or work.

IELTS Life Skills test format

There are 3 Life Skills tests available:

  • IELTS Life Skills – A1 Speaking and Listening
  • IELTS Life Skills – A2 Speaking and Listening (Offered in the UK only)
  • IELTS Life Skills – B1 Speaking and Listening

Each test corresponds to Level A1, A2 or B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) – the internally recognised guidelines for measuring language ability. Life Skills tests have two main parts. In the first part of the test, you will be expected to ask and answer questions on familiar topics. The second part of the test is a combined Listening and Speaking task.

What will you have to do?

All Life Skills test takers will be asked to complete a task played on a CD. When you complete the task, you’ll be assessed on your ability to listen for both the general meaning and detail. You will say your answers, although you can make notes on paper while you listen to the CD.

Following this task, you will be asked to discuss a theme related to what you have listened to on the CD.

For people taking IELTS Life Skills B1 level, these is an additional task where you will plan an activity with the other test taker.

How will be assessed?

You will be assessed on four key language skills:

  • obtaining information

  • conveying information

  • speaking to communicate

  • engaging in discussion

At times during the test, you will be allowed to take notes to prepare your answers. The examiner will not mark your notes only your speaking and listening skills will be marked.

Why do I take the test with another test taker?

IELTS Life Skills tests how well you can communicate with other people in everyday English. The best way to test these skills is to pair you with another candidate at a similar level of ability, so you can show how well you can use English to communicate and engage in discussion with others.

How long does the test take?

Life Skills tests are completed in one short session:

  • IELTS Life Skills – A1 Speaking and Listening: 16 –18 minutes

  • IELTS Life Skills – A2 Speaking and Listening: 20 minutes

  • IELTS Life Skills – B1 Speaking and Listening: 22 minutes.

How does IELTS work?

IELTS has been developed by some of the world’s leading language assessment experts and will test the full range of English skills needed for success in your study or new job placement abroad.

You’ll be assessed on the following elements:

  • Listening

  • Reading

  • Writing

  • Speaking

Choosing the right test

There are two IELTS tests available:

  1. IELTS Academic

  2. IELTS General Training.

The test you choose should be based on what you want to do.

IELTS Academic measures whether your level of English language proficiency is suitable for an academic environment. It reflects aspects of academic language and evaluates whether you’re ready to begin training or studying.

IELTS General Training measures English language proficiency in a practical, everyday context. The tasks and tests reflect both workplace and social situations.

If you are taking the IELTS test to support a UK visa application to work, live or study in the UK, you will need to take the IELTS for UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) Academic or General Training or the IELTS for Life Skills test.

The IELTS tests below are included on the list of SELT tests and have been approved for UK Visas and Immigration purposes:
